Amidst the announcement of Mumbai Indians appointing Hardik Pandya as the new captain, reports surfaced suggesting that Delhi Capitals expressed interest in acquiring Rohit Sharma through a trade. This development unfolded after Mumbai Indians, five-time champions, declared that Sharma would be replaced by Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the captain, following an all-cash trade in November.
According to insights shared by Sports Today’s Nikhil Naz in a YouTube video, Delhi Capitals initiated talks with Mumbai Indians to secure a trade for Rohit Sharma. However, the attempt to bring Sharma to Delhi Capitals was unsuccessful, as Mumbai Indians turned down the offer, holding onto their iconic skipper.
Naz commented, “Delhi Capitals approached Mumbai Indians for Rohit’s trade, but the deal fell through. Mumbai Indians weren’t willing to part ways with Rohit Sharma, despite the interest from Delhi Capitals.”
In explaining the decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as captain, Mahela Jayawardene, the global head of performance for Mumbai Indians, emphasized the team’s commitment to building a legacy and staying prepared for the future. In a press release, Jayawardene stated, “Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy for the IPL 2024 season, ensuring the team remains future-ready.”
